Understanding Balance & Dizziness Conditions
Three main factors feed into our ability to maintain equilibrium: our vision, our balance apparatus in the inner ear (the vestibular system), our bodies’ senses, and our ability to move (sensory-motor system). Our central nervous system integrates all three of these in a sophisticated mechanism that keeps us in equilibrium.
When we are younger, good balance is essentially a matter of keeping our core muscles active. However, as we age, other considerations can creep in. As we grow older, we lose muscle, and our sight can compromise our ability to remain steady on our feet. In addition, other factors such as medications, illnesses associated with ageing, injuries, anxiety, pain, urinary urgency/frequency, weight fluctuation, and sleep disturbance can contribute to loss of balance, reduced mobility and dizziness. Fortunately, for many patients, reduced balance need not be permanent. Balance rehabilitation physiotherapy can help.
